L-1011 'Stargazer' with Pegasus launches ICON

10/10/19 ~ 8:31 p.m. / 9:59 p.m.

Northrop Grumman's Lockheed L-1011 aircraft 'Stargazer' departs Cape Canaveral's Skid Strip runway at 8:31 p.m. EDT October 10, 2019. Strapped to its belly is the Pegasus XL rocket carrying NASA's ICON spacecraft into space. Drop and ignition of 58-foot launcher, just the second one from the Cape since 2003 but 44th overall Pegasus launch since 1990, occurred about 100 miles off the Florida coast at 9:59 p.m. EDT. Two days later, the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, built in 1972 and one of if not the last ones still flying, departs the Skid Strip at sunrise following a successful launch.  (Photos: Northrop Grumman)

Additional photos without the rocket, like the sunrise shot below and daytime takeoff photos, show the Stargazer leaving the Cape a few days later.
