Total Solar Eclipse 2024

Total Solar Eclipse of April 8, 2024, as seen from Lake Saint-Louis, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. This was a last-second location decision based on the weather forecast and the need to fly out immediately after the eclipse was over to attend an important launch back home. Being near the edge of the eclipse track gave us approximately 1m 28s of totality, and positioned the diamond rings and Baily's Beads on the same side of the moon for second and third contact. For the first time for me, we observed the eclipse through transparent cirrus clouds, giving the photos an ethereal look and filtering out some of the finer, sharper details in the corona compared to my past photos.

This was a sight I have not seen on any of my previous total eclipse experiences. Made very apparent by the high, transparent cirrus clouds (which look thicker with the changing light than they really were), the circular shadow of the moon races towards our viewing site (photos by Katie Darby):
